Memorial Day in Ogunquit
Ahh, Spring by the Sea! Sure it is May and there may be just a little chill in the breeze – but with the warmer temperatures comes one of our favorite things: the long weekend. Always on the last Monday of May – so you can think of it as an early celebration of summer – the weekend is highlighted by quilts and parades in Ogunquit.
Here are our top five things to do on Memorial Day in Ogunquit
Get Historic
Sure, now days we jump in the car and take a long weekend for Memorial Day. But how did they celebrate, oh say, back in 1745? Visit the Museums of Old York and see for yourself how the taverns, cooking and celebrations happened. You can even check out the jail – Old Gaol – and the school house. You know, to really appreciate not being in either.
AIDS Quilt Display
Yes, the weekend is about relaxing for many – but if you want to see a very special and moving memorial, the Dunaway Center is the place to stop. The only stop in Maine for the AIDS quilts, the display remains one of the most impactful ‘voices’ for efforts like the Frannie Peabody Center.

Memorial Day Parade
Held in Wells in the morning, the parade then moves to Bourne Lane for the step off in Ogunquit and ceremonies at Veteran’s Park. And if you stick around after Ogunquit’s Memorial Day parade, you can stop by the Village Food Market to pack up a picnic basket and head to Ogunquit Beach for lunch.
Take Flight
Soar to incredible heights – or watch the kids zip line. Located just south in Kittery, you’ll soon find yourself meeting the aerial course challenge with gusto. From the lobster trap to spider’s web, cat walks to Burma bridges, you’ll be making memories together and laughing. Yes, laughing – those harnesses and helmets bring a chuckle.
Craft Beer Pub Crawl
Of course we all know that beer goes with that Memorial Day BBQ. But here in Maine, we like our craft beer a whole lot. So check out a flight of locally made Maine beer at Cornerstone in Ogunquit or hop from Tributary Brewery in Kittery to SOME Brewers in York to Shipyard in Eliot to Federal’s Jacks in Kennebunk. Just be sure to designate whose drivin’!
Still not sure about Memorial Day in Ogunquit?
Add a little extra fun with a walk along Marginal Way or a drive to the top of Mt. A to see the stunning view. Be sure to bring your camera. There really is nothing as refreshing as crisp Maine air and the joy of celebrating the long weekend in Maine.
